Lesbian Couple Booted from Restaurant
February 29, 2012 by HRC staff
The following post comes from HRC Communications Intern Matt Arnstine:
In Phoenix, Arizona, a lesbian couple was asked to leave the Sheraton Hotel's District restaurant after sharing a kiss during a dinner celebrating their one-year anniversary. According to news reports, Kenyata White and Aeimee Diaz shared a simple kiss, and were taken aback when a manager asked them to leave the restaurant. Kenyata and Aeimee were deeply saddened with the manager’s behavior. Kenyata wrote on her Facebook page, “Just got asked to leave the District in downtown phoenix for giving my lady a hug and kiss on our anniversary. We met there....I am very upset....”
This incident is all the more disappointing due to the fact that Sheraton has a 100 percent rating on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index. Commenting on the incident, Nick Ray, Executive Director of Equality Arizona, said, “What is needed is diversity training and for that manager and staff to feel they’ve been trained well enough not only to do what's right in this situation but also know if I do what's right my boss will have my back.”
Sheraton executives have met with the couple and have said they regret the incident and are taking it seriously.
