Leading Evangelical Christian Voice Announces Support For Marriage Equality
April 9, 2013 by Sharon Groves, Director, Religion and Faith Program
Jim Wallis, CEO of Sojourners and a bestselling author, public theologian, speaker, and international commentator on ethics and public life as well as founding member of President Barak Obama's White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and a leading spokesperson for Christianity in the news, came out in support of marriage equality in an interview with the Huffington Post.
"I think we have to talk about, now, how to include same-sex couples in that deeper understanding of marriage," Wallis said. "I want a deeper commitment to marriage that is more and more inclusive, and that's where I think the country is going."
His evolutionary stance on marriage equality reflects an ongoing conversation about how to "commit liberals and conservatives to re-covenanting marriage, reestablishing, renewing marriage,” said Wallis during the interview.
Sojourners has been a powerful witness for those who have suffered because of poverty and injustice; we are delighted that their leader, Jim Wallis, has added his voice to the million people of faith who support allowing all loving couples the opportunity to marry who they choose.
