Laying the Groundwork for a Marriage-Friendly NY Legislature
March 23, 2010
After last week’s pick-up of a marriage equality vote in the New York state Senate with the special election victory of Jose Peralta in Queens, the momentum towards marriage in New York is palpable. On Friday night I attended an HRC Long Island meeting in Suffolk County with senate candidate Regina Calcaterra. She has gotten some great media attention for her campaign against Senator Ken LaValle who voted no on the marriage equality bill. Ms. Calcaterra spoke passionately of how her early childhood and her current work as an attorney taking on corporate fraud prepares her well for this race. She is a strong advocate for marriage equality and she wowed the friendly crowd gathered to hear her speak. I was proud to meet her and hear directly from a passionate ally. On a personal note it was quite moving to meet her on the night before I was attending my younger brother’s wedding. The pride which filled me as I watched my brother state his vows also moves me to continue the fight for marriage for all.
