Lady Gaga Mobilizes Monsters for Marriage Equality in NY
March 8, 2011 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
On Friday night, at her concert in Buffalo, NY, Lady Gaga spoke from the stage and asked her little monsters (as she affectionately calls them) to contact Buffalo area State Senator Mark Grisanti and ask him to vote for marriage equality. She also tweeted and put the request on Facebook.
Today the New York Times profiled the action. How did this all happen? Well, HRC WNY field organizers James Bragg and Errin Doyle have been collaborating with local organizations to strengthen the campaign for marriage. James first thought of the idea during a brainstorming session with Equality Rochester and we passed it on. Hours later, Lady Gaga was tweeting for marriage equality in New York. Prior to her performance, local grassroots organizations worked to gather letters in support of civil marriage. OUTspoken for Equality and Stonewall Democrats of WNY joined HRC in collecting over 400 letters that will be sent to Buffalo area senators.
As we work across New York and this great country to achieve equality for all, it’s important to be reminded that one person can make a difference. Thank you, James, and thank you Lady Gaga, for taking action. Join our Campaign for NY Marriage and tell your state Senator, “Baby, I was born this way. Please vote for marriage equality.”
