Lady Gaga and Western New Yorkers Join the Fight for New York Marriage
March 10, 2011 by David Contreras Turley, Associate Regional Field Director
The following post is from HRC Western New York Regional Field Organizers Errin Doyle and James Bragg:
Change is in the air as HRC-WNY organizers Errin Doyle and James Bragg awaken Western New Yorkers to recognize their historic role in marriage equality. With the support of traditional allies, HRC-WNY is cultivating a grassroots support for marriage equity in five senate districts from Jamestown to Rochester.
HRC-WNY has been collaborating with diverse local organizations to strategically apply pressure on WNY senators in advance of a possible June vote. Throughout Lady Gaga’s recent Buffalo concert, organizers initiated an aggressive “love letters” campaign where voters signed letters of support to be sent to their state senators. Despite the howling winds from frozen Lake Erie, HRC-WNY collected over 400 letters backing civil marriage.
Most importantly, during the concert, Lady Gaga made several compelling requests for fans to contact Buffalo Republican Senator Mark Grisanti and urge him to support marriage equality. Within moments of her request, Senator Grisanti’s computer server crashed. The very next day, Senator Grisanti reached out to HRC-WNY and local LGBT organizations to set up a private meeting to discuss marriage equality.
