Kickballers for Marriage Equality
April 7, 2011 by Adrian Matanza, Regional Field Director
The following post comes from Lisa Votino-Tarrant, HRC field organizer on Long Island, working to pass marriage equality:
My colleague, fellow Long Island organizer, Dominique Salice and I have been working closely with The Pride Network: Hofstra University Chapter to harness the excitement the campus has for passing marriage equality. This included HRC tabling at some of The Pride Network events this past week and even found one of our organizers literally “pitching in” during a “Kick Out the Hate” Kickball Tournament sponsored by The Pride Network: Hofstra University Chapter.
Over 70 students showed-up at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium to show that they wanted to “Kick Out Hate” at the university. Every player received a t-shirt that stated “Gay? Fine by Hofstra” on the front. According to students, the school has worked very hard to become an LGBT-friendly college.
When students weren’t busy on the field, many were found at the our table filling out postcards and writing letters to urge their state senator to support marriage equality. We also provided stickers for the students and before we knew it, HRC was everywhere in the stadium!
We’re delighted with the relationship we have formed with The Pride Network: Hofstra University Chapter. As New York gears up to vote on marriage equality, there is no doubt that these students will let their voices be heard.
