Join Coach Rob: Become an Athlete for Equality!

Many weekends this summer, I attended pride festivals in cities around the country educating people about the discrimination the LGBT community faces and how their membership to HRC, at any amount they can contribute, helps to beat back our opponents of basic fairness.
As the Director of Membership Outreach, my job is to educate people about the importance of their support and involvement with HRC, but also to make sure that HRC has dynamic ways for individuals to interact with our organization. One of the most personal and innovative ways you can contribute to the mission of the HRC is by becoming an Athlete for Equality. As an HRC Athlete for Equality, you can dedicate your participation in an athletic event of your choosing to HRC. All you have to do is select your race, register for it directly through the race organizers, then on HRC.org you can set your personal fundraising goal and get moving for equality. Or, you can join the HRC team of runners participating in the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday October 28th here in Washington, D.C. Currently, we still have spots available for this incredible race, but registration closes on Friday, August 3!
I know that for most people, myself included, signing up to run a marathon is quite daunting. Signing up to fundraise as part of that commitment can be too. Rest assured that in addition to fundraising support, whether you live in the DC area or not, you won’t be training alone.
That’s where Rob Falk (Coach Rob) comes in. By day, he is the General Counsel to HRC, but in his free time, he is both a USA Triathlon Level One Coach and a part of the Ucandoit and Team Nrgy coaching networks. He’s completed two ironman triathlons, 13 marathons and will be running alongside our athletes on race day. He coached me for my first Olympic triathlon and regularly encourages me to push myself athletically - so I know firsthand how knowledgeable and strategic he is. We are just so fortunate to have him as a part of the team. Rob is providing our athletes with training programs for the beginner, intermediate and advanced marathoner. Each week, he’s also sending out exercises designed to improve each runner’s strength and range of motion. His program is peppered with tips and videos on gear, nutrition, injury prevention and race day strategy.
