John McCain Tweets Urging Governor to Veto “License to Discriminate” Bill
February 24, 2014 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Today, GOP Senator John McCain added his hope for the veto of Arizona’s discriminatory SB1062.
I hope Governor Brewer will veto #SB1062— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) February 24, 2014
McCain joins a growing number of elected officials who are speaking out against the so-called “Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” including Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Representative Ron Barber.
Should Governor Jan Brewer allow the "License to Discriminate" bill to become law, any individual, corporation, institution, or business organization may be permitted to refuse services to LGBT people on the basis of religious freedom.
SB1062 aims to legally sanction discrimination against not only the LGBT community, but also women. For example, a business owner whose religion tells him that women shouldn't work outside the home could refuse to sell her a business suit or to seat a woman celebrating a promotion at work in a restaurant.
