Jason Collins On TIME’s “100 Most Influential People in the World”

Post submitted by Chloe Stokes, HRC Digital Media Intern

Jason Collins has been selected as one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World,” for his brave step decision to come out while still active in a major U.S. sports league.

Collins’ coming out changed the face of sports forever, as he showed the world that LGBT athletes shouldn’t have to remain silent about their lives. He is a role model for youth across the nation, demonstrating that dedication and hard work define success, not sexual orientation.

Chelsea Clinton, a friend of Collins’ since their days at Stanford University, wrote the article about Collins for TIME.

“Jason’s kindness and fierceness alike derive from that word too often bandied about and too rarely true: integrity. Jason has always maintained he’s first a basketball player. He is. But he’s also a leader and an inspiration,” writes Clinton.

Clinton is a longtime advocate for justice and equality. This year, Clinton spoke at HRC’s Time To THRIVE conference, a workshop for youth-serving professionals to help them better serve LGBT youth.
