It’s Time to Bring Full Marriage Equality to the Garden State

The text messages were steady and constant. My phone was rattling next to me like a rapid fire machine gun. I was going about 60, keeping up with the typical Friday afternoon New Jersey pre-rush hour traffic, wondering why I was being sent text after text. Truthfully, it was unsettling not being able to check my messages when it was obvious someone had something important to tell me.
As soon as I exited, I pulled over. The initial texts were short, sweet and cryptic.
I scrolled down to the beginning of the long message trail and discovered the reason behind the excitement. New Jersey Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobsen ruled that same-sex couples in New Jersey were being denied equal rights, and must be allowed to marry starting October 21 in order to enjoy all federal benefits.
Then the emails came flooding in. Our New Jersey United for Marriage coalition partners hurriedly called for a rally at our Montclair offices to call attention to and celebrate Judge Jacobsen's ruling.
Just two hours later, a large crowd gathered in front of the NJUM offices to cautiously, but happily, celebrate.
The ruling is a huge step, but we still have a lot of work to do in New Jersey due to Governor Christie's appeal of the ruling. We urge everyone to join the fight here. We need your support whether you live in New Jersey or New York or Minneapolis.
It's time to bring full marriage equality to the Garden State.
New Jersey United for Marriage, of which HRC is a proud partner, has mounted a campaign to secure marriage equality legislatively for all loving and committed couples in New Jersey.
Whether equality is achieved through this case being allowed to stand or through the legislative process, New Jersey United for Marriage will fight to make sure that the protections and responsibilities of marriage are extended to all loving and committed couples in New Jersey.
HRC has five field staff in New Jersey as part of its investment in the campaign. To join in the fight, contact email@example.com.
