It’s OK to Be Takei
May 24, 2011
George Takei has never missed an opportunity to speak out for equality. So when a Tennessee Senate committee advanced the legislation known as the “Don’t Say Gay bill,” which would prohibit honest, healthy and age-appropriate conversations about sexuality in Tennessee’s classrooms, the Star Trek legend and HRC Coming Out spokesperson simply could not remain silent. So he took to YouTube to stand up for young LGBT Tennesseans.
In his video, which you can view at georgetakei.com, Takei says, “The so-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law is premised on the misguided belief that by not talking about gay people they can simply make us disappear. I’m here to tell Tennessee and all LGBT youth and teachers who would be affected by this law that I am here for you.”
And Takei even offered a solution to the problem.
“Any time you need to say the word, ‘gay,’ you can simply say, ‘Takei,’” he joked, offering examples such as declaring your support for “Takei marriage” and marching in a “Takei Pride Parade.”
Though there’s nothing funny about the legislation, Takei finds a way to make us smile – in part because of his great sense of humor, and in part because we are so proud to have such a passionate and vocal advocate on our side.
