Indiana State Representative Sean Eberhart affirmed his commitment to serving all Hoosiers today when he came out in opposition of House Joint Resolution 6, which not only limits marriage to heterosexual couples and denies recognition of same-sex unions, but also bars future legislatures from passing legislation in favor of marriage equality.
Rep Eberhart said in his statement, “For the first time in our state's history, our constitution would take rights away from people.”
Rep. Ebehart previously supported the amendment when it passed the House and Senate in 2011. He has since stated that this vote was a mistake. His new position represents the changing tide of support for equality for all Americans, and will surely be vital when the fight resumes in Indiana in 2014.
Having passed the Indiana legislature in 2011, House Joint Resolution 6 must now pass unaltered again, at which point it will be put on the ballot for popular vote. However, work has already begun to keep this hate out of the Indiana Constitution.
HRC is a proud coalition partner in Freedom Indiana, a grassroots campaign focused on defeating this harmful amendment in the 2014 legislative session. Along with corporate allies committed to the understanding that HJR6 would have a sweeping negative impact on business in the state, Freedom Indiana is working on the ground to keep the amendment from reaching the legislative floor.
With the support of Representative Sean Eberhart, and other pro-equality state legislators, we can ensure that ALL Hoosers are treated with fairness and respect.
