Indiana Anti-Freedom Amendment heads to House Floor
January 22, 2014 by Lynne Bowman, Regional Field Director
Late this afternoon, Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma announced he was moving House Joint Resolution 3 and House Bill 1153 out of the Judiciary Committee and placing it in the Elections and Appropriations committee where it had a much more likely chance to move to the House floor. Tonight, with less than 24 hours notice for consideration of the bill, that specially selected replacement committee passed both pieces out of committee on a party line vote of 9 to 3. The resolution and accompanying bill now head to the House Floor for consideration by the full legislative body where a vote could come as soon as this Friday. Should the resolution pass out of both the House and Senate before March 15, voters in Indiana will be asked to decide on November 4 whether to enshrine discrimination against same sex couples in the Indiana Constitution.
Freedom Indiana, the bipartisan campaign to defeat HJR3 and 1153, coordinated nearly two hours of testimony from Hoosiers representing the business, faith, public education, and legal communities across the state. Additionally, everyday constituents from nearly all of the committee members’ districts shared why this amendment is bad for their families, their neighbors and the state of Indiana. Ultimately these voices were only taken into consideration by a minority on the committee.
While today’s result is disheartening, and the manner in which the Speaker manipulated the legislative process is disappointing, the Freedom Indiana team will not give up. With field staff on the ground in districts across the state, and volunteers filling phone banks every night, the coalition effort to defeat this anti-gay amendment will continue to do the hard work necessary to make sure that Hoosier voices are heard.
HRC is proud to be a contributing member of the Freedom Indiana campaign and we encourage all of our members and supporters to become involved in the work happening across the state.
