In New York, One Day Makes A Difference!
April 27, 2009
HRC's Northeast Regional Field Organizer Anthony Hayes has the scoop on HRC's participation in tomorrow's Equality and Justice lobby day at the New York state capitol, sponsored by Empire State Pride Agenda:
Tomorrow, HRC will participate in Equality and Justice Day in Albany hosted by Empire State Pride Agenda (ESPA). There is no question that the momentum behind marriage equality has had an effect on registration for Equality and Justice Day. ESPA actually had to close registration ahead of schedule because over 2,000 people signed up to go to Albany to speak to their legislators about three crucial pieces of legislation: Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), Dignity for All Students Act, and marriage equality. HRC is a proud to sponsor of bus of participants in Equality and Justice Day, and we have been working tirelessly to mobilize our members across the state to take action. Working with ESPA, Marriage Equality NY, Broadway Impact and many other pro-equality organizations, our members are attending in-district meetings with their legislators, writing letters, hosting forums, and taking action for equality. In Albany tomorrow, legislators will hear directly from their constituents about why there is no room for discrimination for anyone in the great Empire State. Equality and Justice Day is a tremendous undertaking by ESPA and there is no question that it will be the greatest lobby day so far. It's important to keep in mind the years and years it took to get to this moment. People often ask me "how can one day make a difference?" and the answer is the same: our legislators will NOT take action unless they hear from the people who vote for them. Over 2000 people will get up at 5 AM and ride a bus for 3 hours to Albany to expalin to their legislators why these bills are so important. They will share their stories about their lives and their families--and nothing is more powerful our personal voices putting a face to the inequality in New York State.
