April 12, 2013 by Lynne Bowman, Regional Field Director
Today, the Illinois Chapter of the NAACP announced its support for marriage equality. President Mitchell noted in the announcement that the group's "bedrock commitment" to civil rights, includes marriage equality. You can read the full statement, including comments by NAACP President Ben Jealous, here.
HRC field organizer Ryan Rowe’s work with the NAACP during the Maryland, Delaware and North Carolina marriage campaigns was instrumental in developing support among African American voters. He has been able to move those relationships to benefit the Illinois campaign and has been on the ground in Illinois working with the Illinois Unites for Marriage Coalition to garner support among African American legislators and clergy.
