Hundreds Rally for Marriage Equality in Albany

As the NY Senate deliberates in the waning hours of the official legislative session, hundreds of New Yorkers rallied to urge the Senate to pass the Marriage Equality Act.

Speakers included marriage equality leaders from both Chambers (Senators Tom Duane and Adriano Espaillat, and Assembly Members Danny O'Donnell, Deborah Glick, Teresa Sayward, Matt Titone and others).  But the crowd went wild when Republican state Senator Jim Alesi of Rochester addressed the crowd.  He voted no on marriage in 2009 but announced days ago that he is now a yes vote on marriage.  "I'm a Republican and I was born this way," said Senator Alesi. "I'm proud to support marriage equality," he continued.

The crowd of hundreds was jubilant but also focused, as all are aware that the legislative clock is ticking.  I urged the crowd to ask their friends and family members to contact their state Senators and I urged them to sign-up and volunteer at our phone banks later today, tonight and tomorrow.  Judging from the pages of filled out volunteer sheets, the crowd understands that they have an important role in making history happen.
