Hundreds of Reno Pride Goers Support ENDA
August 22, 2013 by Adrian Matanza, Regional Field Director
Last weekend, members of the HRC Las Vegas steering committee and I joined several volunteers in Reno, the second largest city in Nevada, to talk to voters about the need of employment protections for all Americans.
Currently, lesbian and gay people can be fired simply for being who they are in 29 states; transgender folks can be fired in 33. While Nevada has these protections, including protections in housing and public accommodations, it was important for many Nevadans to contact their representatives to make sure these protections are given to all Americans.
As you may recall, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) passed the Senate Help, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee last month, 15 to 7. That vote included support from three Republican senators.Nevada’s senior senator, Majority Leader Harry Reid, has committed to bringing ENDA to a full vote by the end of the year.
Organizers are on the ground in Nevada and around the country, helping thousands of Americans contacts their representatives. Learn more about the campaign and what you can do to help by visiting www.passENDAnow.org.
