HRC Praises the Nomination of Magistrate Judge Marisa Demeo for DC Associate Judge
March 26, 2009
By Cristina Finch, HRC senior legal counsel:
President Obama announced on Tuesday his intent to nominate out lesbian Magistrate Judge Marisa Demeo for an Associate Judge position on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Demeo is currently serving as a Magistrate Judge of the D.C. Superior Court, a position she has held since 2007. Demeo was formerly the head of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund’s (MALDEF) Washington, DC office. Demeo also served with distinction as an Honors Program trial attorney in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division Employment Litigation Section, where she prosecuted public employers for pattern or practice employment discrimination. HRC is especially pleased by President Obama’s nomination of Magistrate Judge Demeo to be an Associate Judge at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Demeo has a demonstrated understanding and unwavering commitment to civil rights. She has more than fifteen years of experience working with LGBT, community, Latino, and civil rights groups such as DOJ Pride and GAYLAW. Judge Demeo is also a former co-chair of GELAAM where she conducted HIV and breast cancer outreach and education to the local Latino community. Demeo clearly possesses the intellectual rigor and experience required of an Associate Judge and we are confident her knowledge and expertise will serve our community well.
