Hulu, YouTube Add LGBT Categories
April 26, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
This week Hulu and YouTube Movies added LGBT categories to their genre options, making it easier than ever for users to find positive portrayals of the LGBT community in film and television.
The announcement follows a release agreement between the online content providers and LGBT film distributor Wolfe Video, with guidance from Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
Access to relatable characters in media is particularly impactful for LGBT youth.
“For LGBT youth who are just coming out, this kind of accessibility to diverse and affirming images can have an enormous impact on their self-esteem, serving as a much-needed counterbalance to the bullying and harassment that so many of our young people must navigate,” Kathy Wolfe founder and CEO of Wolfe Video and Wolfe Releasing wrote yesterday in a Huffington Post article.
