HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan Supports Marriage Equality
November 16, 2011 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan added his voice to those supporting marriage equality last night – the first sitting cabinet member to do so. Metro Weekly broke the news, with Donovan telling the outlet he “absolutely” supports marriage equality.
Donovan also recognized the enormous implications of June’s marriage equality victory in New York: ''I was enormously proud to be a New Yorker on the day that it passed. I actually worked for Andrew Cuomo when he was Housing Secretary. I worked for Mike Bloomberg who has been a constant supporter of the law – what is now law.''
HRC is working to achieve marriage equality through our Americans for Marriage Equality campaign. It features the voices of well-known Americans standing up for equality, including Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Academy Award-winning actress Mo’Nique, and civil rights pioneer and NAACP Chairman Emeritus Julian Bond. Donovan is joining the 53 percent of the American public who support marriage for same-sex couples, according to a number of nonpartisan polls, including Gallup, CNN, and Washington Post/ABC News. Support has increased an unprecedented 20 points since 1996, according to the Pew Research Center.
