HRC’s Welcoming Schools Visits Fox 5 News to Discuss New Film
September 25, 2013 by Noël Gordon, Foundation Project Manager
HRCF's Welcoming Schools Director Kim Westheimer recently sat down with Fox 5 News in Washington, D.C. to discuss the premier of the project’s newest film What Can We Do? Bias, Bullying, and Bystanders. Shot in two schools in the Twin Cities, the film spotlights elementary school teachers who have been using the Welcoming Schools curriculum to talk to their students about the impact of bullying and the power of standing up for one another.
“Educators have been asking us for a tool like this,” said Westheimer. “They want something with practical examples of how they can start conversations about bullying and bias in the classroom. And that’s the goal of this film.”
The film debuts today at Cleveland Elementary School alongside a panel discussion and a musical performance from the Cleveland School Chorus. Special guests include David Esquith of the U.S. Department of Education, author Kathryn Otoshi of "One" and "Zero,"and award-winning filmmaker Ellen Brodsky.
Today’s event is cosponsored by Welcoming Schools, the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association, Council of the Great City Schools and the American School Counselors Association.
