HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools to Honor Acorn Woodland Elementary School of Oakland, Calif.
May 1, 2014 by Rohmteen Mokhtari, Coordinator, Family Project
The HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program provides resources, training and technical assistance to help elementary schools take a comprehensive approach to school climate improvement and bullying prevention.
Tomorrow, we will recognize ten schools and two school districts that go the extra mile to create safe and inclusive schools at the first annual Welcoming Schools Seal of Excellence Award Ceremony in Saint Paul, MN.
One of the schools being recognized is Acorn Woodland Elementary School in Oakland, CA. Since 2011, the school has been working with our partners at Our Family Coalition (OFC) to implement the Welcoming Schools approach.
As a result of the efforts of principal Leroy Gaines and many other committed educators the school has established a leadership team, provided comprehensive professional development for educators and staff, used Welcoming Schools lesson plans and recommended books in the classroom and held bilingual family nights to engage parents and families.
All with the goal of embracing family diversity, avoiding gender stereotyping and ending name-calling and bullying
Earlier this month Principal Gaines received the OFC Ally Award.
Watch as he discusses the Acorn Woodland’s efforts and how their partnership with Welcoming Schools and Our Family Coalition has impacted the school community.
