HRC’s “All Children – All Families” comes to Kansas City
August 27, 2011 by Tony Wagner, Western Regional Field Director
What a fantastic few days we’ve had here in the Kansas City area! We started off by welcoming students back to school at KU and UMKC, held a presentation and networking reception for LGBT and Allied Professionals, presented on HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index at KU Med Center, held a benefit for the LIKE ME Lighthouse at Missie B’s and today we’re at the Kansas City Public Library navigating the murky waters of LGBT adoptions.
Over 50 people attended the adoption workshop today, which was moderated by Lori Ross, Executive Director of the Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association. Other panelists included Nancy Simons Bean from Adoption & Counseling Services for Families, Inc., Lynn Barnett from MidAmerica Family Treatment Center/ Midwest Alternative Family Alliance andSanford P. Krigel from Krigel & Krigel, P.C. The panel brought years of professional experience to the discussion from the service provider, as well as legal perspective.
“LGBT people want to live life and raise their families in a climate of love and commitment just like their straight counterparts. Being able to experience the joy of raising children is a gift that anyone should have the right to do if they chose to do so – but for lesbian and gay couples, that process could be difficult and riddled with pitfalls along the way. Our hope is that we were able to provide the initial tools and information to attendees that they will need as they begin their journey towards foster care and adoption,” says Ross.
In recognition of her leadership in supporting and serving LGBT families, HRC Foundation is honored to present Lori Ross and the Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association with it’s All Children – All Familes seal of approval, the first such recipient in the state of Missouri.
