HRC to Hold Two Online Screenings of Groundbreaking Welcoming Schools Film
March 29, 2012 by HRC staff
The following post is from HRC Welcoming Schools Director Kim Westheimer:
We hear so much about school bullying these days that it’s refreshing to have an opportunity to hear children speak thoughtfully about how they want to be treated and how they want others to be treated in their schools. If you’re looking for that kind of inspiration, join Welcoming Schools for a live stream of our new 13 minute professional development film, What Do You Know? Six to twelve year olds talk about gays and lesbians.
You’ll hear from a 12 year old who harangued his friends for using the word gay in a negative way until they stopped doing it. You’ll hear from a 6 year old girl who first heard the word gay when the book “And Tango Makes Three” was read in her Sunday School class. She doesn’t really think it’s a big deal if someone is gay or lesbian. And yes, you will hear from students who have experienced bullying and isolation because of how they appear or because of having LGBT family members. You’ll also hear how peers and educators stood up for them. You’ll get ideas about how you can support kids who are being targeted and how you can stop kids who are doing the targeting.
Who are these amazing children? They are a diverse group of 6-12 year olds from Montgomery, Alabama and the Greater Boston area. Of the 25 kids:
- Nineteen are being raised by moms and dads
- Three have lesbian or gay parents
- Three are being raised by single moms
- Two are adopted
- Six have parents who were born outside of the U.S.
They’re pretty much regular kids who have something to say to us if we’ll listen. And educators and parents from across the country have been listening and telling us how grateful they are for the opportunity to learn from these young people. They are taking their words to heart and figuring out how they can live up to the expectations of the children in the film. So join the conversation and the live stream.
