HRC Stands Against Stop and Frisk

The following post comes from HRC supporters Britni Jackson & Marilyn Abalos:
HRC recently joined NAACP President Ben Jealous, the Rev. Al Sharpton, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, SEIU 1199 President George Gresham and labor unions, civil rights organizations, and LGBT groups to oppose the New York Police Department’s “stop-and-frisk” policy. HRC was proud to be one over 60 organizations involved with the Father's Day Silent March protesting the unjust policy.
The city’s “stop and frisk” program allows law enforcement officials to indiscriminately stop law-abiding citizens. In 2011, officers stopped and questioned nearly 700,000 people under this policy; 87 percent of whom were African American or Latino.
It’s important for progressive groups to show a united front in the face of such clear discrimination. At a time when so many of our opponents, like NOM, seek to drive a wedge between LGBT communities and communities of color, it’s critical that we stand together and send a message that injustice against one is an injustice against all.
HRC previously participated in a press conference earlier in the month calling on the NYPD to halt the discriminatory practice.
