HRC Staff Gather to Watch President Obama’s Historic Announcement

The announcement broke yesterday around 3 p.m. after ABC News released part of Robin Roberts’ interview with President Obama, filmed earlier that afternoon.
Join HRC in thanking President Obama for boldly supporting full marriage equality.
It’s a day that we’ve hoped and prayed for for a long time, and such a groundbreaking moment in our movement’s history. By 6:30, with a few tears shed and smiles still fixed upon our faces, HRC staff gathered in the DC Equality Center to watch an extended version of the interview on ABC Nightly News with Diane Sawyer. We clapped, hooted and hollered as President Obama boldly affirmed that “same-sex couples should be able to get married.”
It’s been a whirlwind week for LGBT people and allies across the country. President Obama’s announcement followed directly on the heels of Tuesday’s hard-hitting loss in North Carolina. And just when it seemed that Republican leadership had effectively killed Colorado’s Civil Union Act – which has received wide bipartisan support – Gov. Hickenlooper announced that he would call a special session of the legislature to reconsider the bill.
President Obama’s announcement continues to build momentum toward full LGBT equality and hope for a future when loving, committed couples getting married is a cause for celebration, not division. A majority of Americans are already there, and it’s inspiring to see President Obama stand so firmly by our side.
