HRC Spring Lobby Day

Post submitted by Travis Swanson, HRC Policy Assistant

Last Thursday, HRC Members and supporters descended on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to speak with their Members of Congress during HRC’s annual spring lobby day. While on the Hill, more than 230 HRC members and supporters met with more than 196 Members of Congress and staff to discuss issues important to the LGBT community, including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) and the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA).

Personal stories from their constituents can make a strong impact on Members of Congress. One constituent while expressing support for UAFA legislation told his personal story about how his partner of nine years was sent back to Israel because the United States doesn’t recognize their relationship.  There are many other bi-national same-sex couples living in this similar situation and being forced to choose between the person they love and the country they love.

As HRC members advocated for equality, the House of Representatives finally voted to pass an LGBT-inclusive, bipartisan Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This historic piece of legislation creates the first federal sexual orientation and gender identity non-discrimination statute.  We look forward to working with members of the House and Senate to have more legislative victories during this Congress.
