HRC Represents at SXSW
March 13, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
SXSW has again taken over Austin, Texas. The film, music and interactive festival is described many ways – my favorite of which is “nerd camp” – but in actuality, the festival is so much more than digital geeks attending panels and shaking hands.
SXSW Interactive is an opportunity for the greatest creative minds across the globe to join with fellow digital innovators. For many of us, this is not the first time we’ve spoken. We engage on the various social platforms, but rarely met in person. As much as SXSW is a time for digital media teams to share ideas, it is also a time for us to build our community.
Such a challenge is not unlike that which HRC works to overcome everyday: to not only engage our community in the smallest of towns through our digital platforms, but to build a sense of community on the ground where individuals can connect with fair-minded Americans in real-time. In these spaces we are able to validate each other and build upon our community to create something even greater.
I am proud to represent HRC at this conference as we continue our search for new ways to engage fair-minded Americans in a digital space, and for ways to make new face-to-face connections with our community. (Keep an eye out for location-based mobile technology. It is the darling of this year’s SXSW.) I look forward to the ways we can innovate across our digital platforms to create a stronger sense of community and, ultimately, a more resolute movement.
