HRC Presents All Children-All Families Seal of Recognition to Chicago’s Children’s Home and Aid
September 27, 2013 by Ellen Kahn, Director of the Children, Youth & Families Program
Today we presented HRC’s All Children—All Families Seal of Recognition to Children’s Home and Aid, based in Chicago and serving nearly 60 Illinois counties.
We applaud the leadership of Children’s Home and Aid and thank them for their commitment to ensuring that qualified LGBT individuals and couples are able to become foster and adoptive parents to the thousands of children and youth in Illinois’ foster care system.
It is not a cakewalk to earn the All Children-All Families seal; the agency’s leadership team must first complete an agency self-assessment which provides a baseline measure of their LGBT policies and practices. Then, with ongoing support from HRC’s ACAF staff and consultants, the agency begins to make the necessary changes and improvements.
Once the agency has achieved all For Children’s Home and Aid, that work included a multi-day, multi-site training for their foster care and adoption staff, along with rewriting policies and updating their materials and publications.
Those of us who are working to remove barriers to LGBT foster and adoptive parents appreciate the dedication of agencies like Children’s Home and Aid, and we welcome them wholeheartedly into our growing family of seal earners—they are the 41st and second in Chicago.
