HRC Lends Its Logo to Glee’s Second Episode
September 29, 2011 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
In case you missed it, HRC’s ubiquitous logo made a guest appearance in last night’s episode of Glee.
Gleeks Beware: Spoilers Lie Ahead!
In the episode, character Brittany Pierce (played by Heather Morris) sets out to help pal and fellow Glee Clubber, Kurt Hummel (played by Chris Colfer), in his campaign for student body president.
Her campaign strategy centers around unicorns, which she explains are like Kurt because he is “someone who knows he's magical and isn't afraid to show it.”
Kurt was bullied the previous season after coming out, but overcame much of the adversity he faced at school, thanks to an accepting circle of family, friends and school officials. Nevertheless, Kurt struggles to stay true to himself and balks at Brittany’s over-the-top, rainbow flag-waving, unicorn-horn-donning tactics.
Unfortunately, bullying is a harsh reality for many LBGT youth, many of whom may not receive the same level of support as a character on a television show. Hurtful teasing, name-calling and bullying affect the targets, the perpetrators and the bystanders. HRC’s Welcoming Schools curriculum works to create safe and welcoming schools for all children and families.
So as you are re-watching last night’s “I am Unicorn” episode (because we know you will) see if you can spot HRC’s logo on Kurt’s campaign posters. And check out our store for your own HRC merchandise to proudly display your solidarity.
