HRC Joins the Jacksonville Coalition for Equality
February 20, 2014 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
Earlier this week, I traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, one of our country's most populous cities with limited protections for its LGBT residents.
HRC Jacksonville organizer and community advocate Chevara Orrin and I met with a diversity of community leaders who support a non-discrimination ordinance. From business executives, to religious leaders, to elected officials, to community advocates, we spent the day strategizing about how to organize and mobilize support for the ordinance.
Over a great lunch at BBs in downtown, leaders of the Jacksonville Coalition for Equality agreed to work harder and smarter than last year, when the city council vote on the ordinance came up short.
Former HRC organizer Jess Osborn now lives in Jacksonville and is working with Equality Florida, which, like HRC, is a partner of the Jacksonville Coalition for Equality. She is organizing support for ordinances in the nearby communities of Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and Neptune Beach.
Passing an ordinance in this large Florida city will give momentum to the effort to pass the statewide bill, the Florida Competitive Workforce Act.
