HRC Joins May Day March in Los Angeles for Workers’ & Immigrants’ Rights

This post comes from Hyacinth Alvaran, HRC Diversity Program Manager.

On May 1, HRC will be joining thousands of advocates in Los Angeles, CA and across the country for the May Day marches for workers' rights. HRC members and supporters are invited to join; to sign up with HRC, please click here. Labor unions play a major role in mobilizing these marches, and over the years, these marches have taken on the rights of immigrants as workers and community members, and the urgency of passing comprehensive immigration reform to secure these rights. HRC is a staunch supporter of comprehensive and inclusive immigration reform, including:
•         Creating a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants, including DREAMers
•         Supporting equal treatment of LGBT families, including the right of Americans to sponsor their same-sex spouses who are living overseas
•         Reducing backlogs that impose decades-long waits for families to be reunited with their loved ones
•         Securing access to healthcare for individuals who are legalizing their status, including individuals with HIV / AIDS

Through the leadership of its Los Angeles steering committee, HRC will participate as part of the local march's Queer Contingent, a diverse and united front of LGBTQ people calling for immigration reform that is inclusive of LGBTQ people and their families. This contingent is endorsed by over 30 LGBTQ organizations drawing approximately 500 marchers within this contingent alone.

The broader May Day march itself is sponsored by over 35 labor and civil rights organizations, including the AFL-CIO, API Equality-LA, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, the LA County Federation of Labor, CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles), Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California, and local SEIU chapters.

HRC members & supporters joining the march will be meeting outside of the Chinatown Starbucks at 639 N. Broadway, Ste. 101A, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
