HRC Joins Campaign to Raise Awareness for Suicide Prevention

September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to highlight the urgency of addressing the preventable, second leading case of death among youth as young as age 10 through age 24.
This month, HRC is proud to join the Trevor Project and national partners in the mental health, education, suicide prevention, youth and LGBT communities to raise awareness about suicide prevention among youth, particular those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.
The Trevor Project’s Talk to Me initiative asks individuals to join the multi-faceted campaign by asking people to take a “Talk to me pledge” to encourage young people to let friends know they are willing to be supportive when times are hard. Just three simple words that, when said out-loud, could help save a life.
This campaign for conversation is rooted in research that indicates improving both help-seeking behaviors and access to care can have a dramatic effect on suicide prevention. At its heart, Talk to Me is about making it ok to offer help and being willing to connect a person with life-saving resources.
