Yesterday in Los Angeles, CA, HRC joined the May Day March for workers’ and immigrants’ rights. In addition to highlighting labor rights and economic issues, these marches underscore the urgency of passing comprehensive immigration reform to secure the rights of immigrants as workers. HRC’s Los Angeles Steering Committee lead the participation of its members in the Queer Contingent of the march. The Queer Contingent is a diverse and united front of LGBTQ people calling for immigration reform that is inclusive of LGBTQ people and their families.
"As a first generation Chinese-American from Hong Kong, immigration will always be an important issue to me,” said Sklar Toy, Diversity Co-Chair of the HRC Los Angeles Steering Committee. “The ability for my family and relatives to immigrate to the U.S. has allowed us to live a life full of opportunities and freedoms, and I want others to have the very same things that my family and I have."
HRC is a staunch supporter of comprehensive & inclusive immigration reform, and was proud to join 150 marchers in the Queer Contingent as well as the broader march of 1,000. Partnering organizations of the Queer Contingent included the Human Rights Campaign, API Equality-LA, Los Angeles Queer (LAQ), Coalición Translatin@, A3PCON (Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council), Bienestar Human Services, Latino Equality Alliance (LEA), Gender Justice LA, Immigrant Youth Coalition – LA, Immigrant Youth Coalition - IE, Lambda Legal, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, ACLU So. California, Equality California, St. Johns Well Child & Family Center (Transgender Health Program), MarioWire, LA Condom Campaign -- LA County Dept. of Public Health, and Barangay LA.
