HRC is proud to be a platinum sponsor of Gay Games 9, set to kick-off this coming Saturday, August 9 in Cleveland+Akron.
Close to 8,000 athletes from over 65 countries will converge in Ohio to participate in nearly 40 events running the gamut from cycling and rowing, to ice hockey and bodybuilding. Dr. Tom Waddell in 1980 first dreamed up the Gay Games, in advance of the first games in San Francisco in 1982. Since those inaugural games, the Gay Games have built an international legacy of changing cultural, social and political attitudes towards LGBT people across the globe, while empowering thousands with the benefits of sports competition.
HRC will be present throughout the week at the 2014 Gay Games, talking to attendees from around the world about our work domestically and abroad. We’ll have a presence at the festival village, pass out fun giveaways at Opening Ceremonies, and host the Official Opening Ceremonies brunch on Sunday, August 10, held 11am to 2pm at Red Space on 2400 Superior Avenue in Cleveland. The brunch is Latin themed, and is sponsored by Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar.
Tickets, both general admission and VIP, are available at www.hrc.org/brunch.
In addition to the brunch, HRC and the Athletes for Equality program are the presenting sponsors of the marathon & half-marathon in Akron on Saturday, August 16. Over 400 athletes will be running and learn about the work of the HRC Foundation along the way, with informational signs posted at each mile marker about the different ways HRC changes lives at home, at work and in the community. For more information on HRC’s Athletes for Equality program and how to participate, please visit www.hrc.org/athletes.
Are you in Northeast Ohio during the Games? If you’ve some time, please consider volunteering with us! We’ve openings beginning Thursday, August 7, running all the way through Saturday, August 16. No experience is necessary and training will be provided.
