HRC Honors World Suicide Prevention Day
September 10, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Today, we pause in a moment of global solidarity to honor World Suicide Prevention Day.
In the last 45 years, suicide rates have increased by 60 percent worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Suicide is among the three leading causes of death among those aged 15-44 years in some countries, and the second leading cause of death in the 10-24 years age group.
To show your support for suicide prevention and to remember a lost love one, join the global community in lighting a candle near a window at 8 p.m.
Throughout National Suicide Prevention Month, HRC proudly joins the Trevor Project and national partners in the mental health, education, suicide prevention, youth and LGBT communities to raise awareness about suicide prevention among youth, particularly those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.
And for more on HRC’s work to provide tools, facilitate connections with other LGBT student activists across the country and empower youth, visit HRC’s Youth and Campus resource page.
