HRC Hoists the Hawaii State Flag High Above Its Washington, D.C Headquarters
November 13, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Today, we proudly say, “Mahalo” as we raise the Hawaii state flag above HRC’s headquarters in our nation's capitol.
Twenty years after the Hawaii Supreme Court issued its ruling in Baehr v. Lewin, beginning the conversation on marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples, Hawaii joins the number of states that honor the loving, committed couples who deserve the respect and protections that only marriage can provide.
HRC was a proud founding member of the Hawaii United for Marriage coalition. We have worked alongside our partners at Equality Hawaii and across the islands for several years, first supporting the campaigns for civil unions in 2010 and 2011 and now for marriage equality.
