Lisbeth Melendez Rivera, HRC’s Director of Latino and Catholic Initiatives, will be recognized this Friday at the Latino GLBT History Project’s Third Annual “Mujeres en el Movimiento” awards ceremony. In keeping with the 2014 National Women’s History Month theme of "Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment," the ceremony will honor women who have demonstrated their commitment to women’s empowerment, racial justice and activism at the intersections of the Latino and LGBT communities.
As a testament to Lisbeth’s longtime work at the intersection of Latino and LGBT communities, she is being recognized with The Legacy Award, presented by the Women of the Latino GLBT History Project in partnership with the D.C. Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. In addition to her over 20 years of activism, Lisbeth has been working closely with HRC’s Religion and Faith Program for the past year as the National Coordinator for the A la Familia project. She has been an invaluable member of the team, training and empowering facilitators nationwide working at the intersection of Latino culture, faith and family.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the event will feature a digital photography exhibition, “Mujeres en el Movimiento,” featuring a collection of portraits and profiles celebrating lesbian, bisexual and transgender Latina activists who empower LGBT Latinas and Latinos in metropolitan Washington, D.C. Lisbeth was inducted into the “Mujeres en el Movimiento” exhibit in 2013 and she continues to work every day contributing to the LGBT and Latino “movimiento.”
We extend our congratulations and gratitude to Lisbeth and all of the Latina activists being recognized on Friday!
The awards ceremony is taking place on Friday, March 28 from 6:30-8:30 PM at MOVA in Washington, D.C.
