HRC Contributes to CMS Webinar on Hospital Visitation and Decision Making
February 24, 2012 by Robin Maril, Legislative Counsel, Administrative Advocacy
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in a webinar with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services National Medicare Training Program and the National Center for Lesbian Rights on hospital visitation and decision making for LGBT couples. The webinar, directed at hospital administrators and advocates, provided an overview of the 2011 CMS visitation regulations, which require hospitals partaking in Medicare and Medicaid to allow all patients to designate their visitors and prohibit discrimination in visitation based on a number of factors, including sexual orientation and gender identity. Successful implementation of these important policies will depend on training healthcare providers as well as spreading the word to the LGBT community as a whole. To learn more about the work HRC is doing through our Healthcare Equality Index to raise awareness of these regs among hospitals, and to educate hospitals on best practices in providing LGBT patient-centered care, visit www.hrc.org/hei.
