HRC Celebrates LGBT and Allied Professionals in Kansas City
August 26, 2011 by Tony Wagner, Western Regional Field Director
It was a powerful evening for equality in Kansas City’s Power & Light District last night. With HRC’s blue and gold bus parked on the busy street outside, AMC Theatres welcomed over 100 LGBT and allied professionals to their beautiful Marquee Lounge. Many fair-minded Kansas City area companies were represented in the room and Speakers included HRC President Joe Solmonese and Missouri State Senator Jolie Justice.
The centerpiece of the program was an in-depth discussion by HRC VP of Communications, Fred Sainz, examining the “Tipping Point” where the fight for LGBT Equality is currently positioned. Recent victories such as the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and marriage equality in New York are creating a “see-saw effect” with issues still faced by LGBT Americans, such as medical inequities and DOMA. Encouragingly, in Kansas City and all over the country, committed individuals, companies, and institutions are working together to provide the protections and institute the policies that will tip the scales toward full equality.
