HRC Calls Out Foley & Lardner for Representing NOM, Cleta Mitchell

In a letter sent yesterday afternoon to Foley & Lardner chairman Jay O. Rothman, HRC President Joe Solmonese expressed disappointment with the firm’s recent engagement of NOM. In late October, one of the firm’s partners, Cleta Mitchell, registered as a lobbyist on behalf of the anti-LGBT group in Minnesota. Additionally, the firm submitted comments to a Minnesota state agency echoing NOM’s anti-LGBT rhetoric. In 2009, Foley & Lardner also represented Stand4Marriage DC, an organization formed for the sole purpose of discriminating against gays and lesbians wishing to marry in the District of Columbia, and helped spearhead its unsuccessful efforts to prevent marriage equality in the District.
