HRC Board Member Wally Brewster Sworn-In as Ambassador to the Dominican Republic

Post submitted by Tiffany Dean, HRC Board Relations Manager

On Friday afternoon, approximately 150 of his closest friends, family, and colleagues gathered in the Indian Treaty Room of the Executive Office Building to witness James “Wally” Brewster, Jr. being sworn in as the United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic. Vice President Joe Biden quoted Harvey Milk in his remarks, acknowledging Wally’s commitment to social justice.

President Obama has put forward five openly gay people to be confirmed as Ambassadors (Brewster, along with John Berry in Australia, James Costos in Spain, Rufus Gifford in Denmark, and Daniel Baer as ambassador to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe).

Immediately after the ceremony, guests traveled to the Hay Adam’s hotel to watch Wally take another set of vows, this time to wed his partner of 25 years Bob Satawake.

Ambassador Brewster served as a member of HRC’s Board of Directors from Chicago for several years.

HRC congratulates the Ambassador and Bob on this incredible and well deserved honor.
