HRC At Union Township School Board Meeting Now
October 18, 2011 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
HRC National Field Director and former New Jersey resident Marty Rouse is in Union, N.J., tonight to present the signatures of the more than 75,000 HRC members and supporters who are speaking out against Viki Knox, the schoolteacher who unleashed an anti-LGBT rant on Facebook and Twitter.
Outside the meeting, a large crowd of equality supporters gathered to show their suppprt for local LGBT students. A smaller counter-crowd from the "ex-gay" movement gathered to shout at the protesters and flood the hearing room. As one equality supporter said, "There's nothing wrong with being gay," a man wearing an ex-gay badge walked over and shouted back, "Yes there is!"
The Union Township School Board has opened an investigation into the remarks. It is not expected to reach a decision tonight.
On Sunday, the New Jersey Star-Ledger joined the growing chorus calling for action against Knox in an editorial.
