House GOP Leaders Commit to Spending at Least $3 Million on DOMA Defense

House Republicans are continuing to rack-up a taxpayer-financed bill for their legal defense of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). According to Roll Call, House leadership has amended their contract to reach $3 million – one million more than the last time they raised the cap in fall 2012.
Originally, House Republicans had a cap of $500,000 on their DOMA defense.
Join HRC in calling on House Speaker John Boehner and the rest of the House GOP leadership to stop this costly defense of DOMA now.
House Republicans continue to spend millions in taxpayer dollars despite the fact that a strong majority of Americans – 53 percent – support marriage equality between loving and committed same-sex couples. Notably, they doubled down on their DOMA spending while expressing concern over funding badly needed relief to New York and New Jersey residents still reeling from Superstorm Sandy.
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Whip Steny Hoyer are again speaking out against the costly defense of DOMA – in a letter to Speaker Boehner, Pelosi and Hoyer said the continued defense of DOMA represented neither the will of the House nor BLAG. The Democratic leaders called the DOMA defense “a waste of Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars.”
Take action now – tell House Republicans to stop wasting taxpayer dollars on defending DOMA!
