Hitting the Road in Indiana

This post comes from Adrian Matanza, HRC's organizer working to build support for an inclusive ENDA in Indiana: ENDA-indiana-evansvilleAfter touching down in Indiana a week ago, I have hit the ground running organizing constituents to get in touch with their legislators. On Thursday, I traveled down to Evansville, IN, about four hours south of Indianapolis to speak with the University of Evansville PRIDE president Josh Fletcher. The 2600 student liberal arts college is very well organized and will be embarking on a letter-writing campaign to let their Congressman, Rep. Ellsworth know that his constituents support a trans-inclusive ENDA. Later that night, I also met with No Excuses alum Eliot Colin, who will be joining us when we meet with the Congressman. This weekend, I traveled down to Bloomington, IN, home of Indiana University. I met with members of SAGE, a new LGBT group on campus, and members of the local NOGLSTP, the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals. We met to discuss on campus organizing and ways to contact Rep. Hill to urge him to support ENDA when it comes up for a vote on the House floor. ENDA-indiana-groupshotWhile in Bloomington, I visited local businesses, asking them to write letters to Rep. Hill to vote in favor of Employment Non-Discrimination. The community in Bloomington is very supportive and organized to help contact Rep. Hill. This morning, I met with Planned Parenthood of Indiana to discuss other ways we can work together to urge Indiana members of congress to vote in favor of ENDA. Sonia and Maggie were really helpful with providing supportive contacts across the state and will become a big ally in organizing in Indiana. I am really excited to be in the Midwest working to pass ENDA and have been having a ton of fun so far. If you haven't contacted your legislator to ugre them to support ENDA, you should do it now by going to www.passENDAnow.org. You can also write a letter and send it via snail mail.
