Historic Number of LGBT Delegates Attending Dem Convention
August 24, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte will likely see participation from a historic number of openly LGBT delegates – at least 470 – according to data from the National Stonewall Democrats and reported by the Washington Blade.
State Democratic parties set goals for the number of LGBT delegates they wanted to send to Charlotte and 37 states have met or exceeded those goals. The 2012 convention is the first time openly LGBT delegates will be participating from Alaska, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
When you add in other LGBT people playing a role in this year’s convention, the number rises to 518. That’s an impressive increase from the 365 who participated in the 2008 Democratic convention, and the 282 who played a role in Boston in 2004.
