Healthcare Equality Index: the lives behind the numbers

hei_chart_thumbnail_09Today's release of the Healthcare Equality Index paints a picture of a patchwork of laws and policies that do not adequately address the health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.  The important thing to remember through all the charts and graphs and statistics is that this data reflects the real needs and lives of millions of Americans. In order to give faces to these issues, HRC has solicited stories from everyday people and families about their experiences in the healthcare system.  These stories - posted on our website - tell both the heartache of difficult situations as well as families who have had positive experiences by taking the time to properly plan for emergency situations. Take a moment to peruse the stories that include Kenneth Johnson's ordeal being turned away at the hospital because he didn't have his partner's medical power of attorney on him, or Cheryl Snider Garrison's anxiety over taxes on domestic partner benefits.
