Happy Anniversary, Massachusetts!
May 17, 2013 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Coordinator
Nine years ago today on May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first U.S. state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Since that time, we’ve seen a sea-change in public support for marriage equality, with a strong majority of Americans now supporting marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.
With this month’s victories in Minnesota, Delaware and Rhode Island, over 56 million Americans – 18 percent of the population – live in the 12 states plus D.C. with marriage equality.
The fight for full equality continues, but join us in celebrating how far we’ve come in the past nine years by sharing the image below.
