This post comes from Roxanne Goldberg, Co-Chair of the HRC Intercollegiate Council:
HRC headquarters welcomed a slew of fresh new faces Tuesday night for the kickoff of the Greater Washington, D.C. Intercollegiate Council.
Attracting students from George Washington, Georgetown, American, George Mason, Johns Hopkins, and Marymount, the inaugural meeting was convened to mobilize local university students in the campaign to pass marriage equality in Maryland.
The brainchild of George Washington University freshmen Roxanne Goldberg and Nicholas Russell, the Council was created with the mission of bringing together LGBT and allied students in the greater Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia communities in the fight for LGBT equality.
The meeting included a history of the fight for marriage equality in the state of Maryland, a briefing on the Marylanders for Equality field campaign, and an overview of HRC’s role in the modern LGBT movement.
The evening wrapped up with students signing up for upcoming events, including ID Phone Banking Day on January 28 and Maryland State Lobby Days on January 31 and February 13.
In the upcoming weeks and months, the Intercollegiate Council plans to recruit dozens more students from a variety of universities for phone banking and canvassing trips, to plan social events for LGBT and Allied students, and to reach out to Maryland universities to host satellite IC events and meetings.
