Grandfather Takes Daughter to Task Over Disowning Her Gay Son
October 2, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
One man’s letter calling out his daughter’s behavior is making the rounds on social media this week.
After his daughter kicked out her son for being gay, this unnamed grandfather wrote her a letter in support of his grandson.
"Kicking Chad out of your home simply because he told you he was gay is the real “abomination” here. A parent disowning her child is what goes against nature. The only intelligent thing I head you saying in all this was that “you didn’t raise your son to be gay.” Of course you didn’t. He was born this way and didn’t choose it anymore than he being left-handed… If you find your heart, give us a call."
LGBT youth make up a disproportionally large portion – 40 percent – of the homeless youth population. While we applaud this grandfather’s move to step up and support his grandchild, we have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of those LGBT youth without someone willing to take a stand.
As we uncovered in our groundbreaking study in 2012 of LGBT youth, the deck is stacked against young people growing up LGBT in America. With an increase in public awareness about anti-LGBT bullying and harassment and the strikingly high number of LGBT youth who are homeless, in foster care or living in high-risk situations, it is critical that we better understand the experiences, needs, and concerns of all LGBT youth.
